A friend of mine called the other day and asked if I would stop by to help him setup and configure an external hard drive he had purchased and unsuccessfully setup on his Mac desktop. Upon initial inspection I figured I would just uninstall the WD SmartWare software, reformat the drive, and set it up to simply act as a secondary drive. It turns out that the initial releases of the SmartWare software would require you to configure the drive using SmartWare so I instead of completely wiping the SmartWare software I decided to simply minimize the impact the SmartWare software would have on what my friend wanted to do which was simply have a secondary hard drive that he could copy files to. Below are a couple steps I took to minimize what the WD SmartWare software would do or require you to do before copying files to the external Western Digital hard drive. The first couple of steps are to make sure that the configuration we are starting with is from scratch and sense my friend started the install I wasn’t sure what had been configured so it was better to start over. Uninstall WD SmartWare Using Installation CD: First you will want to insert the CD that came with the WD My Book 1TB External Hard Drive (WDBAAF0010HBK-NESN) into the disc drive of your Macintosh computer.
Once the CD is recognized it should display in your CD/DVD drive as “WD SmartWare”. Expand the WD SmartWare CD to display the contents of the disc as shown in the below example. WD SmartWare CD Contents: Once the contents of the WD SmartWare CD have been expanded click on the “WD SmartWare Uninstaller” which is highlighted in the above example image. Once you click on this a window will pop up asking you to confirm that you want to uninstall the software as shown in the below example image. WD SmartWare Uninstall Confirmation: After you confirm you want to uninstall WD SmartWare from the Macintosh computer you are working on by clicking the Uninstall button you will be required to enter the password for the administrator account and then it will take a short amount of time for the software to uninstall. Once the WD SmartWare software is uninstalled a window will pop open as displayed below to confirm the process has completed. WD SmartWare Uninstall Success Confirmation: Now with the software removed we can start fresh and minimize the impact that the WD SmartWare software has on simple use of the Western Digital external hard drive.
Now click on WD SmartWare from the CD contents to being installation. Once clicked on a window will appear asking what you want to do with the WD SmartWare on the Macintosh computer as shown in the below example image. WD SmartWare Install: Setup Drive You will want to click on the Setup Drive button to continue. After clicking continue a WD SmartWare window will display that provides a short description of the benefit of WD SmartWare and has an Install button in the bottom right corner as shown in the below image. WD SmartWare: Begin Install From this screen click the blue Install button to continue on. The next screen is a SmartWare License Agreement which should simply be agreed to by clicking the blue Agree button.

Clicking the Agree button will install the WD SmartWare software on your Mac and once it is completed a install success confirmation window similar to the one below will display. WD SmartWare: Successful Install Confirmation Window Click the Continue Setup button from the successful install confirmation window displayed above. The next screen will be the intial setup parameters of the WD external hard drive. The most important setting to make use of the drive as easy as possible will be to remove the security or password the drive is encrypted with so the password is not required when moving files to and from the Macintosh computer. Please note that having a secure drive may be beneficial to you depending on what goals you are attempting to accomplish.
In most situations I personally would recommend leaving the password in place so your data is secure however if you are storing only images on the drive and no other sensitive data then removing the password is not a bad idea for ease of use. The password can be removed if it was already set by entering the current password in the top password field, clicking the “Remove Security” radio button, and then clicking the “Update Security Settings” button. The empty WD SmartWare Drive Settings window is displayed in the below example image.
WD SmartWare Drive Settings: Remove Security After updating the Security Settings click the blue Continue button at the bottom right side of the Drive Settings window. You can continue or cancel the rest of the settings because you don’t need to worry about the other settings.
Now the external WD hard drive should display properly as another drive when plugged in via USB. You should also be able to drag files to this drive to back them up or to store them on the external Western Digital hard drive.
One other small task you may want to complete depending on if the drive was previously used or not would be to format the drive to wipe any existing data from it.
